BIOLOGICAL TERMS or BRANCHES OF MEDICINE

1.     Allometry       :  The study of differential growth rate.
2.     Anesthesiology: The branch of medicine specializing in the use of drugs or other agents that causes insensibility to pain.
3.     Angiology       : The study of blood vascular and lymphatic systems.
4.     Anthropology: Forensic anthropology includes the identification of skeletal, decomposed, or unidentified human remains.
5.     Astrology        : The science deals with the study of stars and future forecasting.
6.     Biogeography            : The study of patterns of distribution of animals and plants in different parts of the earth.
7.     Biometry        : Body length relationships across the evolutionary scale.
8.     Biotechnology: The branch of molecular biology that studies the use of microorganisms to perform specific industrial processes.
9.     Cardiology     : The branch of science that deals with study and treatment of heart disorders.
10. Chemotherapy: Treatment of diseases by drugs and other chemical substances.
11. Cognogeny     : Evolution of various forms of life.
12. Dermatology: The branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the skin, hair, nails, oral cavity and genitals. Dermatology is literally the study of the skin.
13. Endocrinology: The study of hormones, their receptors, the intracellular signaling pathways they invoke, and the diseases and conditions associated with them.
14. Gastroenterology: The medical specialty devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system.
15. Gynecology    : Scientific study and treatment of diseases and disorders specially of girls and woman.
16. Hematology    : The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well as of the immunologic, haemostatic (blood clotting) and vascular systems.
17. Histology        :  Study of tissues (Bichat is considered as Father of Histology).
18. Immunology   : The branch of medicine that studies the body's immune system.
19. Jejunostomy   : A surgical operation to create an opening of the jejunum.
20. Laparoscopy  : A type of minimally invasive surgery in which a small incision (cut) is made in the abdominal wall through which an instrument called a laparoscope is inserted to permit structures within the abdomen and pelvis to be seen.
21. Metaphysics   :  The branch of philosophy concerned with the rational query of reality.
22. Microbiology  : The branch of biology that deals with microorganisms, especially their effects on man and other living organisms.
23. Nephrology    :  The branch of medicine that deals with the function and diseases of the kidneys
24. Neuropsychiatry: The branch associated with diagnosis, prevention and cure of mental disorders.
25. Oncology        :  Study of cancer.
26. Ophthalmology: The science deals with the study of the eye and its diseases.
27. Orthopedics   : Branch of surgery that deals with correction of bone deformities and diseases.
28. Otorhinolaryngology: The medical study of diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
29. Paediatrics     : Branch of medicine concerned with children and their illnesses.
30. Paleontology  : The study of the conditions required of fossilization.
31. Pathology       : Scientific study of the diseases of the body.
32. Pathophobia  : Exaggerated dread of disease.
33. Pharmacology: The science that studies the effects of chemical compounds on living animals, especially the science of the manufacture, use and effects of medicinal drugs.
34. Physiology      : A branch of biology that deals with the functions and activities of life or of living matter (as organs, tissues, or cells).
35. Phytology       : The science deals with the study of plants.
36. Psychiatry      : Study and treatment of mental illness.
37. Quarantine     :  The period of isolation decreed to control the spread of infectious disease. The word "quarantine" comes from the Latin word "quadraginta" meaning forty.
38. Radiology       : Scientific study of X-rays and other radiations, especially as used in medicines.
39. Radiotherapy: Treatment of disease by radiation especially X-rays.
40. Scoliosis           Sideways (lateral) curving of the spine (the backbone).
41. Serology         : It is the scientific study of blood serum and other bodily fluids.
42. Sigmoidoscopy: Inspection of the rectum and lower colon using a thin lighted tube. Samples of tissue or cells may be collected for examination under a microscope. It is also called as proctosigmoidoscopy.
43. Splanchnology : The branch of science deals with study of the viscera.
44. Surgery          : Treatment of injuries or diseases by cutting or removing parts of the body.
45. Thantology     : The science that deals with death in all its aspects.
46. Urology          : The branch of medicine that treats disorders of the urinary tract and the urogenital system.
47. Venereology    A branch of medicine which deals with sexually transmitted disease.
48. Veterinary      : Diseases and injuries of specially farm and domestic animals.
49. Xeroradiography: The process of making a type of dry X-ray in which a picture of the body is recorded on paper rather than on film.
50. Zoophobia      :  An abnormal and persistent fear of animals/ fear of strangers.
