CURRENT AFFAIRS - 2015
1.   The new tiger census released by Union Environment Minister, Prakash Javadekar on January 20, 2015, shows that India (which has 70% of the world tiger population) has registered an increase of 30% in country's tiger population in the past three years. Latest estimates show 2,226 tigers roamed forest reserves in the country in 2014, up sharply from 1706 in 2010.
2.    Former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the late Madan Mohan Malaviya (educationist and freedom fighter) were chosen for the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, on December 24, 2014. On December 25, 2014, the President of India announced the Bharat Ratna award to Vajpayee. His birthday, December 25, was declared ‘Good Governance Day’.
       Recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President, with a maximum of three awardees being awarded per year. Bharat Ratna recipients rank seventh in the Indian order of precedence, but are constitutionally prohibited from using the award name as a title.
3.   The 13th edition of ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’, a day to mark the contribution oi the overseas Indian community to the development of India, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on January 7, 2015 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar (Gujarat). The event was held from January 7-9, 2015.
      This year was significant because exactly 100 years ago, a Non Resident Indian (Mahatma Gandhi) had returned to India to serve the people.
       Chief Guest of the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations was Guyana President Donald Ramotar. The Guyana President will also be presented with the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman’, the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians and People of the Indian origin (PIOs).
       Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India.
       The Modi government's key ‘Make in India’ programme was in the centre at Parvasi Bharatiya Divas 2015. The convention provided a platform to overseas Indian community to engage with ‘Make in India’ programme.
       The schemes related to Pravasi Bharatiya Samman are :
       (a)    Persons of Indian Origin Card.
       (b)   Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana.
              Non-Resident Indians (NRI)
              Person of Indian Origin (PIO)
              Overseas Indian (OI) and Expatriate Indian
4.    Modi government set-up National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog in place of the Planning Commission on January 1, 2015. The Prime Minister will head the new institution tasked with the role of formulating policies and direction in the government.
       The Planning Commission was set-up in March, 1950 through a Cabinet Resolution, which the Modi government scrapped in August, 2014.

5.    On January 7, 2015, two gunmen forced their way into and opened fire in the Paris headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, killing twelve including staff cartoonists Charb, Cabu, Honore, Tignous and Wolinski, economist Bernard Maris, editors, Elsa Cayat and Mustapha Ourrad. French President, Francois Hollande described it as a "terrorist attack of the most extreme barbarity". The two gunmen were identified as Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi, French brothers of Algerian descent.
6.    The government appointed eminent filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani as the Chief of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on January 19, 2015.
7.    President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Nasim Zaidi as the new Chief Election Commissioner on April 18, 2015. He took over from Harishankar Brahma.
       The Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed by the President of India for tenure of six years or up to the age of 65 years. The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only through impeachment by Parliament.
8.    AK Mittal has been appointed new Chairman of Railway Board on December 31, 2014.
9.    Senior IPS officer Prakash Mishra was appointed as the Directorate General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on December 22, 2014.
10.   Amitabh Bachchan is appointed as the Brand Ambassador for health sector in Andhra Pradesh on January 7, 2015.
11.   An eminent Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Islam has been presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Junior Award.
12.   21st Screen Awards were announced on January 15, 2015 in Mumbai. Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra won the Best Actor for Male and Female category, respectively. Shahid won the award for 'Haider' and Priyanka won for 'Mary Kom'. Best film award was given to film Queen, while its director, Vikas Bahl won the Best Director Award. Hema Malini was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
13.   Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d'Or for the second year in a row and the third time in his career, ahead of Argentinian Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer of Germany on January 1, 2015.
14.   Prominent Chinese theoretical physicist Yu Min has been awarded State Pre-eminent Science and Technology Award for 2014 held at Great Hall of the People in Beijing. He was awarded for his groundbreaking The research, which led to the development of China's first hydrogen bomb in 1967.
15.   The Director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota range (SHAR), MYS Prasad was awarded for the Vikram Sarabhai memorial award 2015 on January 12, 2015.
16.   Eminent Hindi litterateur Kamal Kishore Goyanka has been selected for the prestigious Vyas Samman for 2014 for his book Premchand Kee Kahaniyo Kaa Kaalkramanusar.
17.   The World Future Energy Summit 2015 was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE on January 19, 2015.
18.   Hyderabad will host the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in 2018. This will be the first WCIT to be held in India and the theme of the 2018 WCIT will be ‘Future of Entrepreneurs’.
19.   Book:

       (b)   Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi? by Nathuram Vinayak Godse/Gopal Vinayak Godse. This book contains the original statement given by Nathuram Godse (Assassin of Mahatma Gandhi). Writer is real brother of Nathuram Godse himself.
20.   The year 2014 was ranked as the Earth's hottest year since 1880 as per the two separate analyses done by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists.
21.   Pope Francis has declared 17th century Indian Priest and Missionary Joseph Vaz as Saint in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
22.   Amitabh Bachchan was honoured with the Yash Chopra Memorial Award on December 23, 2014.
23.   Maithiripala Sirisena has sworn-in as 7th President of Sri Lanka on January 10, 2015.
24.   Sushaasan Express was flagged off by the Union Ministry of Mines and Steel on December 25, 2014.
25.   Union Ministry of Home Affairs set-up Mathur Committee to examine the possibility of constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for reinvestigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases on December 23, 2014. The committee will be headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd.) GP Mathur.
26.   The Union government launched Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching on December 25, 2014
27.   India ranked 78th globally in Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI) list of 93 countries in terms of talent competitiveness of its human capital. This GTCI list was compiled by INSEAD Business School In partnership with Adecco and Human Capital leadership institute of Singapore (HCLI). GTCI measures a nation's competitiveness based on the quality of talent it can produce, attract and retain.
28.   In its World Economic Outlook report released on January 20, 2015, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected India to grow at 6.5% in 2016, overtaking China whose growth was forecast to slow down to 6.3%.
       World Economic Outlook is a survey conducted and published by the International Monetary Fund. It is published twice and partly updated 3 times a year.
29.   Leading social networking website Twitter has bought Indian mobile marketing start-up ZipDial on
January 20, 2015. It will be first Indian technology product startup to be bought by Twitter.
30.   The Union government has introduced a Rs. 900 Crore e-governance venture, Panch Deep, to automate all transactions between the organizations and staff with regard to Staff State Insurance Coverage Company (ESIC).
31.   The team of researchers led by Gregory Lanzaro of University of California-Davis have discovered a Hybrid Super Mosquito in the West African country of Mali that is resistant to insecticide-treated bed nets. The findings of this discovery were published in the journal, ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)’ on January 6, 2015.
32.   The World Health Organization released the Global Status Report on Non-communicable diseases on January 19, 2015. As per the report, every year, 16 million people die prematurely before the age of 70 from heart and lung diseases, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Most of these deaths are preventable.
33.   Hyderabad-based Indian Immunological Limited (IIIL) has launched ‘Raksha Blu’ India's first vaccine for ‘blue tongue’ disease prevalent among flocks of goats and sheep across the country.
34.   According to trends in Global Carbon Dioxide emissions, a record of 35.3 billion tones (Gt) Carbon Dioxide, which is 0.7 Gt higher than last year, was released in 2014.
35.   World's smallest Goanna lizard species was discovered in Australia. The new species has been named Dampier Peninsula Goanna while its scientific name is Varanus sparnus. The goanna lizard weighs barely 16 grams.
36.   Poland won its first Hopman Cup title, beating the USA on January 10, 2015.
37.   Andy Murray won the ATP World Tennis Championship at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi on January 4, 2015. He won the title after the world number one Novak DJokovic withdrew from the final match citing illness.
38.   Australia won the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2014-15 played against India by 2-0. It was the four match test series.
       The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a Test cricket series, played between India and Australia.
39.   Australian cricketer Brett Lee announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after a 20-year career on January 14, 2015.
40. Three-day Flamingo Festival had concluded on January 12, 2015 at the famous brackish water of Lake Pulicat in Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary located at Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. It will be hosted in Doravari Satram mandal, in Nellore district.
       The festival provides a unique opportunity for people, particularly ornithologists, environmentalists, bird watchers, forest and tourism officials to study the biodiversity of Pulicat and Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary.
41.   Diplomatic community was formalised by VIENNA convention. It protects diplomats from prosecution under host country’s laws useful during conflicts or tense situations. Home country can waive if diplomat has been involved in serious crime unconnected to work. But almost no country does so.
42.   Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill is pending in Parliament. Constitution Amendment is required to pass it. It will not be possible to roll out GST before 2017?
43.   Ganga Devi (1928-1991) is one of the most acclaimed Mithila artists of the 20th century. Her painting a kohbar ghar has been seen in a room of the Crafts Museum in New Delhi in the 1980s. The walls of the room had been “painted from top to bottom by Ganga Devi over a period of 3 to 4 months” despite suffering from cancer. It was in late 1980s. She was detected with cancer and the doctors suggested that she should not be allowed to go back to Mithila as she needed regular chemotherapy. So she was given some space at the Crafts Museum to stay and get herself treated. Since she was in acute pain those days, she wanted to draw and also given her a room to paint. Almost all the four walls of that room were painted by her from the floor to the ceiling. The date of completion of the work as signed by her on it was 1.1. 1990.
44.   River Godavari was formally connected with river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh in 1st river linkage on
September 16, 2015. The Pattiseema lift irrigation project will link the two rivers. The next river to be linked Ken (M.P.) and Betwa (U.P.) in December 2015.
       The goal is to interlink major rivers to eventually form a national water grid.
45.   Gir National Park in Junagadh district of Gujarat (India’s only Lion’s Sanctuary) celebrates of its establishment as a sanctuary on september 18, 2015. It was notified as a sanctuary on September 18, 1965 with 174 lions. Now it has 523 lions.
46.   Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (ICAR) is stituated at Hessaraghatta Lake Post, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
47.   Mullah Mansour, a kin of dead Mullah Umar, is appointed as new Taliban Chief in Afghanistan. Mullah Umar died in Pakistan.
48.   A joint WHO-UNICEF report states that deaths due to Malaria have plunged by 60% since 2000 and the numbers of malaria cases have also dipped by 37% in 15 years. This means that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target about malaria to halt and begin to reverse incidences by 2015 have been met conveniently.
49.   Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) is the most outstanding player of football in the world. He is again declared FIFA best player of the game by FIFA for the year 2014. Land Messi (Argentina) the next best player. Both play for Real Madria and Barcelona (Clubs in Spain) respectively.
50.   Jagmohan Dalmiya was the Chairman of BCCI and Anurag Thakur is its Secretary. Jagmohan Dalmiya died of heart attack on September 20, 2015.

57.   Pansare, Dabholkar and Kalburgi, three famous rationalists, were killed in 2013-15, allegedly by right wing fundamentalists. Citing the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq and the murders of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and M M Kaburgi, the group voiced concern over the rising intolerance in the country. “People are being murdered for their beliefs and opinions. There has been no official condemnation of these groups (by the government) and we question this silence,” said eminent documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan on Wednesday while returning his National Award along with 9 others, including Dibakar Banerjee, Nishtha Jain, Anand Patwardhan and Rakesh Sharma.

106. Nobel Prize winner PETER HIGGS has joined the ranks of Charles Darwin and Albert Eistein by winning the world’s oldest scientific prize, the Royal Society’s Copley Medal. In July for his pioneering work on the theory of the Higgs Boson, which was discovered in 2012.
107. World Car Free Day is observed on September 22 in order to fight traffic congestion and air pollution.
108. India remains the top supplier of experienced doctors to OECD countries - 34 countries followed by Chinese. According to a recant report, 86, 686 Indian expatriate doctors worked in OECD, which include the US and EU bloc, during 2010 - up from 56,000 in 2000. The US employs 60% of expert Indian doctors followed by UK. Phillippines provided the most number of nurses at 2.21 lakh followed by India 70,471.

119. Anmol Swami from Meerut who lives in Gandhinagay colony, received the title 'Meerut's Google Boy' last year in 2014 by a city-based school as at the age of 3, he remembered the name of the capitals of almost all the countries in the world.
       Kautilya Pandit is a child prodigy from a Kohand village of Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. He was born on 24 December 2007, in Kohand village of Karnal district, siraha, India. Kautilya Pandit, aged about 6 years, (as of 2014) displays good memory power regarding current affairs, general knowledge and geographical statistics. A series of T.V. shows displaying the memory power of Kautilya Pandit have made him known as "wonder kid" in Haryana and surrounding states and made him popular. He is also nicknamed "Google boy".
120. Ravindra Jain (28 Feb. 1944 - 09 Oct. 2015) was an Indian music composer and lyricist. He won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 1985. He was a well respected figure, and considered a role model for many people, as he overcame his disability of blindness. He died on 9th October, 2015 in Mumbai's Lilawati hospital after prolonged illnesses.
